From Field Engagement to Administrative Insight: My DCIP Experience

My DCIP internship provided valuable hands-on exposure to governance, community development, and electoral administration, strengthening my understanding of public service and social responsibility.

My three-month association with the District Collector’s Internship Programme (DCIP) was a deeply meaningful learning phase that broadened my perspective on governance and public service. The internship offered continuous exposure to both community-level realities and district-level administration, helping me understand how public systems function in practice. Throughout this period, I engaged with multiple dimensions of district administration. Working alongside officials and fellow interns allowed me to witness how coordination, planning, and accountability come together in public service delivery. Each task contributed to building a clearer understanding of social responsibility and administrative functioning.

A significant part of my learning came from field visits to Tribal Unnathis such as Vaniyampuzha, Tharippapotti, Kumbalapara, and Chembra. These visits provided insights into tribal settlements, livelihoods, and everyday challenges faced by the communities. Direct interaction helped me recognize the importance of culturally sensitive and inclusive development approaches. I was also involved in livelihood survey activities, which helped me understand the economic conditions of tribal households and their dependence on local resources. This experience emphasized how livelihood security, education, and welfare policies are closely interconnected.

I was also associated with the THRIVE THIRIKE Project, an initiative of the Malappuram District Administration focused on strengthening educational support systems for students from marginalized backgrounds. The programme operates as a structured intervention to enhance academic engagement, reduce dropout rates, and address systemic barriers to equitable access to education.

I was also associated with Oppam Malappuram, an initiative of the Malappuram District Administration aimed at enabling differently abled aspirants to access elite administrative coaching. The programme functions as a structured institutional intervention to address systemic barriers in public service recruitment and to promote inclusive representation within governance structures.

In addition to social sector exposure, I actively participated in electoral administrative work, including election form uploading, hearing processes, and BLO Assign–related tasks. I visited Tanalur, Ponmundam, Niramaruthoor, and Tanur village offices to monitor the digitisation of SIR enumeration forms, accompanying Malappuram District Collector Sri. V. R. Vinod IAS and Deputy Collector Smt. Swathi Chandramohan KAS. These visits highlighted the precision and responsibility involved in electoral data management.

I also attended SIR form hearing sessions at GHS Trikkulam Secondary School, Chemmad; GUPS Klari Primary School, Edarikkode; and Ponmundam Madrassa along with Deputy Collector Swathi Chandramohan KAS. Observing these hearings offered insight into grievance handling mechanisms and reinforced the value of transparency and citizen participation in democratic processes.

Working on BLO Assign responsibilities further strengthened my understanding of coordination between field-level officials and the district administration. It gave me an appreciation for the efforts of frontline staff who ensure smooth execution of government processes.

Overall, the DCIP internship played a vital role in shaping my academic and practical understanding of governance. The exposure, interactions, and responsibilities I experienced during these three months have left a lasting impression. I carry forward these learnings with gratitude, as they continue to influence my approach toward public service and social development.
