Field Visit to Maancheri Tribal Settlement: A Transformative Internship Experience

As part of my internship, I was given the valuable opportunity to visit the Maancheri tribal settlement, which became one of the most meaningful experiences of my journey. Accompanied by three fellow interns and four officials, we began our journey from Nilambur in collaboration with the Forest Department, Mahila Samakhya, Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP), and the Health Department. This coordinated effort aimed to understand the living conditions of the tribal community and provide essential support through welfare and health-related services.

The journey itself was both challenging and enlightening, as we travelled through forested and remote areas to reach the settlement. Upon arrival, we were warmly received by the members of the tribal community. We interacted closely with them, listened to their concerns, and learned about their daily lives, traditions, and struggles. These interactions provided us with valuable insights into their unique culture, social structure, and strong connection with nature. Despite limited resources and infrastructure, the community displayed remarkable resilience, unity, and self-reliance.

One of the main objectives of the visit was to provide essential assistance to the residents. As part of this initiative, we distributed food items such as rice, pulses, and other basic necessities to ensure immediate nutritional support. The Health Department conducted basic medical check-ups, during which doctors and healthcare workers examined individuals, identified health issues, and provided appropriate guidance. Following these consultations, necessary medicines were distributed to those in need. This ensured that common health problems were addressed and that community members received timely care and attention

Throughout the visit, I actively participated in organizing the distribution process, assisting healthcare personnel, and engaging with families. These responsibilities helped me develop better communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills. More importantly, they taught me the value of empathy, patience, and respectful engagement while working with vulnerable communities. Observing the collaborative efforts of different government departments and social organizations also enhanced my understanding of integrated development and effective public service delivery

This experience was deeply enriching on both a personal and professional level. Witnessing the simplicity and dignity with which the tribal community lives, despite facing numerous challenges, left a lasting impression on me. Their ability to remain hopeful, supportive, and resilient in difficult circumstances was truly inspiring. It helped me reflect on my own life and develop a greater appreciation for basic comforts and opportunities that are often taken for granted.

Moreover, the visit strengthened my sense of social responsibility and commitment to public service. It reinforced the importance of inclusive development, grassroots engagement, and responsive governance. The experience motivated me to contribute more meaningfully to society and to work towards policies and programmes that uplift marginalized communities.
